Terracotta Rhyton in the Shape of a Bull’s Head
1st millennium
Azerbaijan
This stately representation of a bull’s head is a beautifully decorous representation of the animal. The bull was considered one of the most powerful animals in ancient Azerbaijan and would have been an important animal to use during ancient religious ceremonies.
A Rhyton such as this would have been used for offerings or ceremonial vessels, which would have been compelling substitutes that were sure to win the favour of the gods. Here, the rendering of the animal is strong, yet the artist has captured the powerful subject in an uncomplicated manner. The entire Rhyton is made from the bull’s head and a lipped spout spurts from behind the animal’s head. This is a magnificent work of art that evokes the fine skill of a master sculptor.
